Comfort Posted July 24, 2015 Report Posted July 24, 2015 ‘The airport is now operational round the clock for all practical purposes’Six more parking bays will be developed at the Visakhapatnam International Airport.This would allow up to a dozen aircraft of airlines, especially domestic carriers, arriving late in the night to park their aircraft overnight and launch early morning flights from the city.Confirming the proposal, Airport Director Vinod Kumar Sharma told The Hindu that the passenger traffic was growing and it was poised to grow in leaps and bounds. The plans of IndiGo to make Visakhapatnam Airport a hub for their operations in the south was pending, he said. However, there was a talk of the airline operator acquiring a large number of aircraft during the next one year and once that was done, they might finalise their plans to make the city as their hub. Lanka proposal Sri Lankan Airways is seriously considering launch of a direct flight between Visakhapatnam and Colombo. A delegation from the airline company already visited Visakhapatnam in the past and made a market survey. “They were satisfied with the Customs, Immigration and parking facilities at the airport. We (Airports Authority of India) have no objection to their proposal but they are yet to apply for the DGCA and other mandatory clearances. They would go for the clearances once they finalised their plan,” the Airport Director said. “The airport is now operational round the clock for all practical purposes. The last flight departs around midnight and by the time, the mandatory procedures are completed it would be around 2 a.m. The airport would hardly close for about three hours, after which the operations would begin,” he said. “A project for the beautification of the airport premises will be taken up by the AAI in association with the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA).
