In May this year, Accenture had increased maternity leave to 22 weeks for its employees in India, when the government mandate is 12 weeks. It also allows12 additional weeks of unpaid leave for employees who don't have enough vacation time accrued. In case the mother has medical complications, the company also allows four weeks of paid leave. New fathers get one week of paid paternal leave. Accenture also upped the ante on adoption leave, allowing eight weeks of paid adoption leave for primary caregivers of an adopted child. As part of their efforts to retain employees and help them maintain a healthy work-life balance, Accenture offers discounted childcare services, parenting workshops, employee assistance programmes, and pre and post-maternity counselling sessions. Flexible working options and working from home is also an option for parents. Their Maternity Returners Programme offers career guidance and support for finding ideal re-entry roles for new mothers.

Earlier, maternity leave for Accenture employees in the US had also been increased to 16 weeks, which is a big step in a country where maternity leave is not even mandated by law.

Apart from working mothers, Accenture also has a mentoring programme for other women, where female employees are paired with leadership mentors to help guide their career. The company also encourages workplace groups to help resolve any issues female employees may face at the office.

This week, Accenture announced another policy that will put all employees at ease. CEO Pierre Nanterme told The Washington Post that the company will be scrapping the system of annual performance reviews which put undue pressure on employees. A more dynamic process of rewarding employees will replace the current system of review and ranking. Employees will get timely feedback throughout the year on projects and assignments. Accenture announced this move in an attempt to tackle the high attrition rate in the second quarter this year.

Spelling out the reasons for scrapping the annual review system, Accenture CEO Pierre Nanterme said, “If you put this new generation in the box of performance management we've used the last 30 years, you lose them. The famous annual performance review doesn't make any sense. Performance is an ongoing activity. People want to know on an ongoing basis, am I doing right? Am I moving in the right direction? Do you think I'm progressing? Nobody's going to wait for an annual cycle to get that feedback.”

Happy workplaces make happy, productive employees. The big corporates are showing the way. Here's hoping Indian companies do more to make their employees comfortable and increase productivity.
