NEW DELHI: Amid the fight between the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Chief Ministers over alleged phone tapping, the Union Home Ministry has warned both the states to keep the Centre informed on matters which could compromise the country’s national security.
Sources said the Home Ministry citing section 91 of the CrPC wrote a strongly worded letter to both the States after Supreme Court on Thursday directed Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) to produce call data records in a sealed cover within a week before the trial court in Vijayawada.
An official said the application under section 91 requesting the court to ask subscribers to provide call data records was also subject to safeguard as envisaged under sections 123 and 124 of the Indian Evidence Act.
“Such personal feud leading to pressure on service providers for disclosure of data may jeopardise Intelligence and law enforcement agencies covert operation against individuals under the scanner for anti-national activities. It is not in the interest of internal security which directly comes under the domain of Home Ministry. The ministry has asked both the states to keep Central government informed on such sensitive matters before pressurising operators to disclose call records,” ministry sources said.
Cellular operators have been caught between AP and Telangana government over call data records. AP had asked the data regarding certain cellular phone numbers to be disclosed whereas Telangana prohibited them from parting with any information.
