Expecting bondubabu comments Hindi and other language movies can now be dubbed into Kannada The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has brought to an end the monopoly of the Kannada film and TV industry, which imposed an unconstitutional ban on dubbing of other languages' movies and TV serials into Kannada and screening the same. Karnataka and West Bengal are the only two states in the country where movies produced in other languages cannot be dubbed into the local languages (Kannada and Bengali) for screening in theatres. For instance, the Telugu magnum opus Baahubali was dubbed into Tamil and Malayalam languages and released in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, the makers of Baahubali had to release only the Hindi and Telugu versions in Karnataka, as they were not permitted to dub the movie into Kannada. The unconstitutional ban was imposed by the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) and the Kannada Film Producers' Association (KFPA) by force and without any legal backing. As a consequence, a section of movie buffs had approached the CCI questioning the discrimination. They contended that the audience should have the liberty of watching their favorite movies in Kannada. Recently, the CCI termed the ban on dubbed movies in Karnataka as illegal, and imposed a fine on the KFCC and the KFPA. However, both organizations have decided to question the CCI verdict in an appellate tribunal.
