phani41 Posted August 4, 2015 Report Posted August 4, 2015 ELURU: In what has come as a great relief to some farmers of West Godavari district, the authorities on Monday began pumping water from Godavari Western canal into Krishna Eastern Canal (Eluru) as there was no water to be released into the canal from Praksam barrage in Vijayawada. It is for the first time that Godavari water is being used to feed lands in Krishna Eastern Delta. For this purpose 10 motors were set up at the Eluru Eastern Locks to pump water into Krishna Eastern Canal. Another 10 motors would be set up by Tuesday morning to increase the discharge into the canal. Irrigation minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, who switched on the pumps to supply water, said that it was being done with the permission of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. “I had brought this to the notice of the chief minister a couple of days ago. I persuaded him to allow this since it would be the beginning of interlinking river waters,” he said. He recalled that following the rain in June, the farmers had undertaken paddy transplantation operations in the hope of getting sufficient rain for the Khariff crop. However, the Rain God had dashed all their hopes in this regard, he added. With no hope of getting the Krishna water, the farmers in the Krishna Delta were waiting for the Godavari water for their crops, he explained. District collector Katamaneni Bhaskar and government whip Ch Bhaskar were present on the occasion.
