aadwi Posted August 4, 2015 Report Posted August 4, 2015 Dropping a bombshell, the working group of the Krishna River Management Board (KRBM) on Monday made it clear that there was no water for crops under the Krishna river basin in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for this Kharif season. Water, drawn from the Srisailam reservoir, will now be released only for drinking water purposes in both the States. The working group, which met here, decided not to release water for crops - the magnitude of the problem could be gauged from the fact that this directly impacts around 40 lakh acres in both the States. The AP government sought 10 tmc of water for drinking water needs in Krishna delta, where paddy will be raised in 10 lakh acres. According to sources, TS engineer-in-chief C Muralidhar opposed it, alleging that AP was seeking drinking water for Krishna delta only to utilise the same for raising paddy nurseries. He also insisted that Hyderabad needs drinking water. Finally, the three-member working group decided not to release water for agriculture. The drinking water needs will be met as and when the need arises. “We have not decided on the quantum of water to be released. The releases for drinking purposes will be decided on need basis,” an official said. Krishna delta requires water by August 15 for paddy. AP officials also cited drinking water needs of Narasaraopet, Chilakaluripet and Prakasam. The water situation is alarming, due to the prolonged dry spell and minimal inflows from Karnataka. The water level at Srisailam is 802 ft on Monday as against the full reservoir level of 885 ft. This is the lowest level ever in the history of Srisailam in the last 45 years. The water level at Nagarjuna Sagar is 510 ft as against the full reservoir level of 590 ft. TS officials want to maintain the water level at 510 ft at NSP to supply drinking water to Hyderabad. “Right now, there is no chance of pushing water to the right canal either,” an official admitted. It was also decided to launch a website for KRBM.
