Hyderabad IT fraternity joins Car Free Thursday movement

Hyderabad, Aug. 6:  

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the IT hubs of India, scores of IT and BPO professionals in the Hi-Tec City and Gachibowli areas joined the Car Free Thursday movement today.

Led by the industry and Cyberabad Police (the commissionerate that covers the areas under the IT hub), the campaign rallies IT firms and employees to shun cars for one day in the week.

The Hyderabad Software Exporters’ Association (HYSEA), whose software exports stand at Rs. 65,000 crore, has teamed up with a few other stakeholders to promote the event.

“The idea is to promote shared transport services to get to offices and to de-congest the area at least for a day. We know that it will take some time before it becomes a culture. But we would like to bring home the message that fewer cars is good for the city’s traffic,” Ramesh Loganathan, President of HYSEA, said.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has pressed into service more buses along the routes that take employees to the IT hubs.
