is Indian GPS a good idea?

The news that China plans to put in place a sophisticated global satellite navigation system akin to the American NAVSTAR GPS should definitely prompt our authorities to think along the same lines. There is no doubt that this would require a massive investment on the part of the Indian government. But the benefits accruing from this far outweigh the costs. A satellite navigation system will not only give a huge fillip to India's defence capabilities US navigation satellites help American forces undertake precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts located thousands of miles away from army HQ but also provide revenue generating opportunities through commercial navigation services. With China, Russia and the EU developing their own indigenous satellite navigation systems, it would be prudent for us to get started as well.

Along with putting up a complex mesh of satellites, we would also need to simultaneously create a market to harness the benefits of this system. Thus, stakeholders in the communication and commercial transportation sectors need to be roped in to ensure maximum utilisation once we have our own global satellite navigation system up and running. And given the fact that this market is bound to get crowded in the near future, steps need to be taken to make our satellite navigation services commercially competitive.

It is beyond dispute that the technology race will determine the global power structure in the years to come. There is no reason why India cannot keep up with other countries in this regard. It is a fact that our space programme is driven by some of the best brains in the world. Hence, all that is required to have our own satellite navigation system is a bit of foresight. Once we have that, it is easy to see the gains that we can make through this technology.
