An introduction to Molokini, a tiny island off the coast of the island of Maui in Hawaii. Molokini is small crescent shaped island in Maalaea Bay, about 2.5 miles off the south coast of Maui. It is the tip of an inactive underwater volcanic crater. It has been designated by the State of Hawaii as a Marine Life and Bird Conservation District, and it is a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking tours.

Molokini can only be reached by boat, and trips to the island typically begin at the Kihei Boat Ramp. There are no hotels, restaurants or development of any kind on Molokini.

Geologically, Molokini Crater is a volcanic cinder cone that has eroded over the ages into the moon-shaped island seen above. Now the Molokini is a Marine Life Conservation District Seabird Sanctuary, and a world-class dive location. Located 3 miles off the shores of Maui, it is famous for having incredibly clear water with visibility exceeding 100 feet almost every day and often 200 feet! You will enjoy thousands of brightly colored tropical fish and it is possible to see monk seals, whale sharks, manta rays, spotted eagle rays and harmless white tip reef sharks. Molokini crater is one of the most popular and exotic snorkel and scuba diving sites in the entire world. It is a must see destination for any visitor interested in Maui's underwater world.

The only downside to this wonderful place is that is a little too popular. For most chartered boats, this is the main destination everyday. Some carry as many as 200 people! As you might imagine, when all the boats are there - and they do go all at once - the little island is elbow-to-fin with Snorkelers.

The good news is that these boats must leave from Maalaea Harbor, which is about an hour away by sea. Since the earliest they can get loaded and shove off is about 7 am, they don't begin to arrive at Molokini until about 8 am. Of course by this time, the smart people that rented a boat from Sea Escape and launched early at Kihei, have already been scuba diving or snorkeling and are ready to leave for another, less crowded location. You can be sure to be one of these lucky people by reserving your boat early at Sea Escape!
