Newyork Federal Building Lo Shootings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - One person was killed and another was critically wounded after gunfire broke out at a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Friday, New York police and fire officials said.

The shooting, which took place at a building that houses an immigration court, resulted in a single fatality at the scene, a spokesman for the Fire Department of New York said.

The wounded person went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to a hospital, the spokesman said.

Police would not provide any information about the victims.

One of the people who was shot was a security officer at the building, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing an unnamed law-enforcement official. The suspect in the shooting is believed to have then committed suicide with the same weapon, it said.

Kevin Downing of Fort Lee, New Jersey, has been named as the man who shot a security guard dead inside a courthouse in Manhattan. He’s a 68-year-old veteran.

Here’s what we know so far:

 

1. Downing Committed Suicide

 

New York 1 reports that one of the victims has died at the scene. The Wall Street Journal reportsthat the deceased man is Kevin Downing, who committed suicide. A federal source told the New York Times’ Al Baker “I do believe the threat has ceased. It is not an active shooter investigation.”CBS reporter Alice Gainer tweeted that the Downing walked into the building, shot the guard, walked through a metal detector and then shot himself. The Wall Street Journal reports that three guns were recovered from Downing’s body.

 

2. The Security Guard, Kamara Idrefa, Was Killed

 

According to the Wall Street Journal, investigating officers are calling the shooting “random.” Kamara Idrefa, a contracted security employee, has died. He was being treated at the Lennox Hill Heath Complex along 7th Avenue in Manhattan, that street has been shut down as a result.The New York Times reported that Idrefa worked for FJC Security.

 

 

3. A Twitter Account Appearing to Belong to Downing Expresses Very Liberal Political Views

 

According to a Twitter account with the name Kevin Downing from Fort Lee, his politics could be described as very liberal. He seems to particularly passionate about minimum wage rights in America. Downing wrote on March 19, 2014 “Happy Meals, low wages, and pay theft? @McDonalds it’s time to treat workers right.” He also expresses support for liberal politicians Elizabeth Warren and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

 

4. Buildings in the Area Remain on Lockdown

 

CBS New York reports that the federal building remains on lockdown. The federal immigration court is located at 201 Varick Street in Soho, Lower Manhattan. It intersects with Houston Street. According to the court’s official website, the last hearing is at 5 p.m. The gunfire broke out after that hour. A post office is also housed in the building. There 12 stories in the complex that features Department of Justice and Department of Labor offices. Also in the building are the offices of Rep. Jerrold Nadler from New York’s 10 Congressional district.

 

Major traffic delays are ongoing in the area, with the Holland tunnel also affected during Friday’s rush hour. NBC New York reports that the public are being advised to avoid the area until further notice as there is an extensive emergency operation underway along Varick Street. The 1 subway train is bypassing Houston Street.

 

5. A Witness to the Shooting Suffered a Heart Attack

The FDNY says that another person was taken to a nearby hospital after he had a heart attack during the shooting.
