Rao garu praytnalu cheptunnaru kani ministry emo raju garu chetilo unnadikada

A three-member team of experts from the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has begun a field study to assess the feasibility of setting up an airport in the coal hub of Kothagudem.

The members of the team, accompanied by Kothagudem MLA J. Venkat Rao, visited the sprawling site of 1,600 acres identified for airport at Punukuduchelka in Kothagudem mandal as part of a feasibility study on Thursday.

The MLA apprised the team of the topography of the expansive open land identified for the airport, its accessibility to the nearby coal town of Kothagudem and power generation hub of Palvancha.

Mr. Rao elucidated the advantages of setting up an airport at the site in close proximity to the coal town of Kothagudem located in the industrial hub of the mineral-rich Khammam district.

Mr. Rao further highlighted the significance of the famous temple town of Bhadrachalam in the district.

The Kothagudem MLA specifically mentioned about the location of a host of major industries including the Kothagudem-based Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the heavy water plant in Manuguru, the Nava Bharat Ventures Limited in Palvancha, and the ITC Ltd’s PSPD unit at Sarapaka.

Citing the advantages of the location of the site, he asserted that if air connectivity is provided to the coal town, it is bound to prove viable.

Warangal Airport, the largest pre-independence era airport, was built at Mamnoor in Warangal district, in 1930. It was commissioned by the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, along with one at Sholapur, to benefit the businesses, at Sirpur Kaghaznagar for the paper industry's convenience, and to help industries like the Azam Zahi mills at Warangal. Numerous PMs and Presidents have landed at the airport until 1981, and during the Indo-China war, it served as a hangar for government aircraft due to Delhi airport being a target in combat. Many cargo services and Vayudoot services have also used it as their hub.

Infrastructure[edit]

Warangal Airport was the largest airport in the country at the time, with 1875 acres in land, a 6.6 km runway, a pilot and staff quarters, a pilot training centre and more than one terminal.
