Two television journalists have been shot and killed in the US state of Virginia while conducting a live television interview, the station says.

The incident occurred during a live broadcast for station WDBJ7 in Bedford County, when shots could be heard, sending the reporter and her source screaming and ducking for cover.

Footage reportedly broadcast live showed the camera being dropped and the station returning to a shocked news anchor.

The station, a local CBS affiliate, said on its Twitter feed that journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward died in the incident.

"We do not know the motive. We do not know who the suspect or who the killer is," station manager Jeffrey Marks said.

Mr Marks said the shooter was still at large.
