I have 14 years of experience and I am comfortable writing queries. 

 

In one of my interview, the client asked me "how to get second highest number in a table, without using Join statement".

 

out of my stipidity, I did not get any ideas to answer it on the spot. 

 

Later I came out and I realized how much I F##### up in that interview and I am not able to concentrate for almost a week for loosing that job.

 

Answer is very simple:

 

Select max(amount) from salary where amount <> (select max(amount) from salary)

 

well, I lost that job but I got a better job. So, something better might be ahead of you.
