It was a plan devised so meticulously over five years that everyone believed in whatever he orchestrated - everyone, including the city police, fell for his ploys. And the plan's strategist, techie MG Gokul, almost achieved his objective of winning back and marrying his old college love Karuna (name changed to conceal her identity); in the bargain even "doing away" with his wife and easily making his ex-cop father-in-law believe in his 'innocence' while blaming his own dead daughter for being 'vicious' and of having a 'loose character'.

But as the saying goes: a criminal always leaves behind tell-tale clues that expose him. In Gokul's case, it was taking it too far by sending terror threats via WhatsApp to some key security officials in Mumbai and Delhi and even a leading industrialist, saying that a series of attacks would be carried out at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport and on some flight taking off from there. All these threats were in the name of his heartthrob's husband Saju Jose, another techie who Gokul considered the main, and the last, obstacle to be removed before he could get back his long lost love.
Additional commissioner of police (East) P Harisekaran has confirmed to Bangalore Mirror on Sunday that Gokul had finally confessed to killing his wife Anuradha on June 27 at his residence at Fernhill Gardens in HSR Layout Sector VI - a murder he had committed but which had been passed off as a suicide committed by a highly intoxicated Anuradha dying after striking her head on a side table.
Harisekaran confirmed that Gokul, during intense interrogation carried out on Saturday, had confessed to killing her using a Ganesha idol, striking her once on the back of her head and twice on her forehead. He is said to have confessed that he killed her so he could be single again, ready to marry Karuna.
However, what led to the killing being passed off as an accident and Gokul's efforts in trying to frame Saju Jose as a terrorist is what Gokul's meticulous planning is all about.
His confession has thrown up unbelievable accounts of how he used fictitious characters - including one passed off as Archbishop of Bengaluru - using email and WhatsApp IDs to orchestrate the removal of his wife and Karuna's husband to make way for him to marry his long-lost love.
Police officials said Karuna and Gokul had been classmates right from their 12th Std until they completed their engineering in 2007 in Thrissur. They had been intimate with each other through those years but upon completing their degree course, Gokul headed to Delhi while Karuna moved to Tiruchirappalli, both for higher studies.
In Delhi, however, Gokul met Anuradha - at the time a techie - through a common friend; they fell in love and married in 2009. Karuna too got married that year, to Saju Jose - an arranged marriage - and moved to Bengaluru, taking up residence in Fernhill Gardens in HSR Layout Sector VI.
Gokul and Karuna lost touch with each other as job, marriage and family took the forestage.

But on Gokul's front, trouble started brewing in marriage. He worked from 9 am to 11 pm and Anuradha allegedly began having an affair with one of her students in a private institution where she joined after quitting her techie job soon after getting married. This was the trigger that led to a concoction of meticulous plans by Gokul to bulldoze his way while eyeing to get back with Karuna.
His suspicions of his wife having an extramarital affair got confirmed when he was able to read Anuradha's paramour's SMS messages about their lovemaking.
When he was convinced of Anuradha's affair, he initially considered divorce; but his immense love for their two-year-old daughter had deterred him from considering the option.
It was 2011. That was the year Gokul rediscovered Karuna on Facebook. The two resumed contacts and the old love blossomed, at least at Gokul's end. That was enough for him to hope that he could be with Karuna again and with a renewed zeal devised a way to divorce Anuradha while keeping her parents informed about what their daughter was up to. But he wanted to ensure he remained in their good books.
He created an email ID of 'Baba' in 2011. Aware of his wife's devotion to Shirdi Sai Baba, Gokul created the ID and started sending emails to Anuradha. She fell for it, starting to confide with 'Baba' about her ongoing affair with her student, without realising whatever she was confiding was going straight to her husband Gokul. He was collecting all this as evidence to show to her father, a former deputy superintendent of police, what she was up to.
Using that ID, Gokul convinced Anuradha to confess to her husband (himself) about her affair and that she would not continue with it. She discontinued for three months.
But when she resumed seeing her paramour, Gokul thought of creating another ID in the name of 'Asha', which actually is an acronym for Astrology, Spirituality, Humility, Attention, and which really has a Facebook page. Now he wanted Anuradha out of the way like never before.
Gokul started writing to Anuradha in the guise of 'Asha the Astrologer'. 'Asha' gained Anuradha's confidence over a series of mails. 'Asha' then suggested to Anuradha that if she posed nude with her paramour she would perform a yagna that would help keep Gokul remain a silent spectator even as she continue her life with her paramour without divorcing her husband.
It worked for Gokul. In 2013-end, he (as 'Asha') received photos of his wife in the nude with her paramour in a shower in a hotel room which was specially booked by Anuradha for capturing such photos for 'Asha'.
By now, the police said quoting Gokul's confession, Gokul had visited Bengaluru four-five times to meet up with Karuna, who had quit her job in 2011 itself after she had her second child.
In 2014 January, Gokul got a chance to move to Bengaluru citing a promotion, and informed Karuna about it. He ensured that he got a residence in the same place as Karuna - Fernhill Gardens in HSR Layout Sector VI - so it would be easier to remain in touch with Karuna and simultaneously work at removing Anuradha and Saju Jose out of the way.
He succeeded in doing that with Anuradha on June 27, 2015. He, as Asha, had convinced Anuradha to get thoroughly in toxicated so that she could be eligible for performing a 'mahayagna'. Anuradha believed that and got drunk on consuming more than a half a bottle of whisky. That was when Gokul, using a Ganesha idol as a weapon, struck Anuradha on her head and killed her, making it look like a suicide.
Interestingly, Gokul was the prime suspect in the case as the jurisdictional Madivala police suspected murder. But he was let off the hook when his father-in-law gave him a clean chit -- obviously influenced by all the evidences that were sent by 'Baba' and 'Asha' - and even argued with the jurisdictional police who backed off considering that he was a senior retired police official.
With Anuradha out of the way, Gokul set his eyes on removing Saju Jose.
First, he wanted to make Karuna fall in love with him again. Karuna had earlier shared with him that she was not happy with Saju Jose and was considering leaving him.
So, obviously playing on communal sentiments, Gokul started sending handwritten or typed letters showing to be those of Archbishop of Bengaluru. Gokul, as Archbishop, in the first few letters "advised" Karuna not to divorce Saju Jose. That was meant to win Karuna's respect for the 'Archbishop's' letters. That worked. But somewhere down the line, the letters started advising her to divorce Saju.
Gokul even shot off letters in the name of the Archbishop to Saju, informing him that Karuna has mentioned in her confessionals in the church that she was not happy with him and sought a divorce. She took up the matter with Saju, who was obviously not willing to divorce his wife.
Gokul then hit upon the idea of buying a SIM card to use it to send WhatsApp messages to Saju as through it was from a terrorist named 'Salman' belonging to a terror organization.
Gokul by then had attended the last rites of Anuradha before returning to Bengaluru in mid-July, only to find that nothing had progressed on Karuna's divorce issue.
That was when Gokul thought of sending the terror threats to key security officials in Mumbai and Delhi. That nailed him.
