A country’s progress and prosperity is highly dependent on the living standards of the people residing there. In India’s case, there is an extreme imbalance between the poor and rich. While the educated lot is dreaming of Digital India, the Indian farmers find it difficult to arrange for even two meals a day. The monsoon delay may affect our holiday plans but for farmers it is a question of life and death.

 

Since 1995, around 3 lakh farmers in India have ended their lives. This year alone Maharashtra saw 1300 suicides in the first 6 months  and daily we are hearing in news about farmer suicides in Telangana.

 

Governments haven’t been serious about fixing structural problems besetting agriculture—lack of irrigation facilities, insufficient credit and absence of marketing support, minimum guarantee price and so many other issues. In such a situation, drought is just a trigger deepening the cycle of distress and debt, threatening a systemic collapse. Unless the governments does get their act together we cannot save our farmers...
