Instead of NOFN model, 18 states have opted for AP Fiber Grid Model to establish a highly scalable network infrastructure to provide on demand, affordable and end-to-end broadband connectivity of 10 to 20 Mbps per household.

Speaking at the 11th National e-Governance & Digital Summit, Aruna Sundarajan, administrator, USOF and CMD, BharatNet said, “18 states have taken lead. NOFN has been expanded and now it is aiming to provide 10-15 Mbps per household vis-a-vis 100 Mbps to gram panchayat.

The states which have opted for AP Fiber Grid Model are: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Gujarat and West Bengal.

According to industry experts, the states which are active for AP Fiber Grid Model are Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. These states are talking to industry experts on design architecture with respect to State Fiber Grid Model.

Concieved by government of Andhra Pradesh, AP Fiber Grid Project plans to establish a highly scalable network infrastructure to provide on demand, affordable and end-to-end broadband connectivity of 10 to 20 Mbps for all households and 1 to 10 Gbps for all institutions and multi-dwelling units by 2018, in partnership with government of India and private sector.

In case of Andhra Pradesh, the fiber will be laid overhead using the network of electricity poles across the state so that state, district, zonal and mandals are connected with each other using ring topology as much as possible and approximate length of fiber is around 22,500 Km.

In addition, the last mile connectivity will be made available through a network of local cable operators that have the capability to provide bandwidth. Optical fiber shall be laid by the contractor primarily along the electrical pole network under the control of EPDCL and SPDCL.

AP Fiber Grid scope of work includes: Verification and optimization of routes designed based on GIS survey; laying of the fiber network; creating requisite number of points of presence (PoPs); supplying and installation of networking equipment; setting up network operating center (NOC) at central location; implementing OSS and BSS software; setting up cable TV headend; and operations & maintenance of fiber network for one year after going live.
