YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy on Tuesday said the State and Centre were confusing people by making contradictory statements on the issue of ‘Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh'.

Interacting with the gathering, during a meeting aimed at discussing issues like AP Special Status, employment opportunities and State development with students, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy said both Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have forgotten their promises made to the people of Andhra Pradesh, before state bifurcation as well as during elections.

“Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated, with the projection of special status as an incentive for ensuring its overall development and the same was enunciated by the then Prime Minister in Parliament.

However, the present State and Central governments, after coming to power, seems to have forgotten the issue. Such irrelevance to the decision taken in Parliament, portrays our democracy in bad light,” he said.

Mr. Jagan demanded the reason behind the inability of TDP-led government for not asserting pressure on the Centre, for according the special category status. “If Mr. Naidu is really concerned, he should demand for our rights (i.e., special status) and withdraw his Ministers/support from the Central Cabinet,” he said.

He further questioned the intention behind preventing the YSRC cadres from conducting the meet at Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) campus, as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Legislative Party meeting was held in the Senate Hall and similarly the varsity's Tarakarama Stadium was decked up for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit last year.

He criticised the State government for the act and asserted that awareness on special status should be spread among people, especially students. “We will be distributing pamphlets regarding this issue, so that people will know the facts,” he added.

Later, speaking at another public meeting conducted under the aegis of YSRC RTC Mazdoor Union, Mr. Jagan demanded the integration of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) with the State government, as the former has been bogged down with continued losses.
