Sportspersons (Sania, Jawal , Ojha)Adopt Farmers Families In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Nizamabad Lok Sabha member K Kavitha on Sunday launched a programme to adopt farmer families in which their loved ones committed suicide. 

Leading sportspersons took part in the event launched by Kavitha-led apolitical organization Telangana Jagruthi, and donated for the cause. 

Tennis player Sania Mirza, shuttler Jwala Gutta and cricketer Pragyan Ojha are among the ones who responded to Kavitha's appeal and declared their support to the families of farmers who have committed suicide due to debt burden and crop failure. 

Kavitha had organized a round table on farmers' issues last Sunday, and said that her outfit would adopt the families. 

"There has been a tremendous response to our appeal and people from across the world are coming forward to donate and adopt the farmers' families," said Kavitha. 

She said 80 families have been adopted so far, and the Jagruthi will tour across the state to identify the families in distress. 

Sania, who is the brand ambassador of Telangana, donated Rs 3 lakh, and her mother Naseema Mirza presented the cheque to Kavitha in a function held at TRS Bhavan. 

"Agriculture and farmers form the core of our country. Whatever crisis the state is facing, be it farmers' suicides or an earthquake, we have to come forward to help the people," said Naseema. Sania is in China for a tournament. 

Jwala, who presented a cheque of Rs 10 lakh, said it was the duty of every citizen to come forward and help the farmers. "We need to come forward and do whatever we can," she said. 

Ojha donated Rs 2 lakh and he said since farmers are the backbone of the country, he decided to join the effort without any second thoughts. He assured all support to the effort to help the families of farmers. 

The adopted familes will get Rs 5,000 a month from Telangana Jagruthi. 

Government figures say that 430 farmers committed suicide in the last one year, of which 141 have been found eligible for compensation in accordance with the government's criteria. Opposition parties, however, claim that over 1,000 farmers killed themselves in the same period :4_12_13:  :4_12_13:  :4_12_13:

You should either change the title or mention kavita for this organising this, it is her organisation telangana jagruti which is overseeing the program from collecting donations to dispersing them to the victims (5k/month for foreseeable future). Sports stars though contributed but their main push is to encourage others to contribute towards the cause. Much appreciated effort by all of them.
