‘Gulal’ thrown during immersion procession causes burns. An old lady was seen carrying two suspicious-looking bottles to the rally, said victims.

More than 20 youth of Vaddipalle village of Gangadhara Nellore mandal, 15 km from here, were injured in an alleged acid attack on them by a rival group during a Ganesh immersion rally on Sunday evening.

A large number of youth and villagers marched in a rally from the village centre to a nearby tank, accompanied by bursting of crackers and sprinkling of gulal. The village is said to have a tradition of household sending one member to the join the procession with a bottle of gulal to join the revelry.

When Sunday’s procession reached the edge of the tank, some youth on whom the gulal was thrown felt a burning sensation all over their bodies.

Amidst the heavy commotion, they found that some acid bottles had been used in the guise of gulal bottles. The youth suffered severe burns on their backs, shoulders, faces and hands.

It took nearly an hour for the youth to realize that an acidic substance was being thrown upon them, allegedly by a farmer's family that had a long-standing rivalry with the festival organizers.

The youth were rushed to the Government General Hospital in Chittoor. Five of them received severe burns, and were referred to the Christian Medical College Hospital at Vellore in Tamil Nadu.

Some victims informed the police that an old lady was seen carrying two suspicious-looking bottles to the rally. The Gangadhara Nellore police have taken some suspects into custody for interrogation.
