Dear Muslims who plan on going to Mecca for Hajj in future,

I know your religion, prophets and books say many many good things about this pilgrimage.
The intentions behind those words might be good and as a matter of fact, traveling is actually never a bad thing.

I mean, who doesn't want you to visit a place which brings a sense of unity and puts your ego into perspective ?
We Hindus break coconuts and visit temples for the same reason. Ditto !

Everything we do in the places of worship, irrespective of our religion is to feel better about ourselves and re-assure ourselves that we are not so bad, after all. Isn't it?
It feels so.

But see, the thing is, those good intentions written in the scriptures never met bad administrations.
Or failed governments.

Let's just see the statistics of deaths by Mecca stampedes alone.

1990- 1,426 dead
1994-270 dead
1998-118 dead and 180 injured
2001-35 dead
2003-14 dead
2004-251 dead and 244 injured
2006-346 dead and 289 injured
20freaking15-1500 dead and 1000+ injured.

How many years does it take for a country like Saudi Arabia to get it right?

And how many more lost lives before we see that happen?

And have you ever seen accountability so far?

Given a situation like this, what do you do?
Please,re-think.
Re-think and re-evaluate your priorities.

-Would you rather stay alive, stay safe with that little bit of 'hard to get rid of' ego or would you rather leave your last breath under someone's feet?

-Would you rather stay united with your family or leave them alone to experience the 'sense of unity' written in books?

-Would you rather have a life where you fulfill 4 pillars of Islam every second or would you rather die for a 5th one?

Re-think because right now, there are thousands of people across the globe whose homes have been destructed, families disrupted, livelihoods gone and hopes crushed in the name of religion.

While the world is welcoming them with open arms, it still breaks our heart to see them be uprooted from what they thought is their everything.

A Syrian migrant gave the world a Steve Jobs. Who knows how many such brilliant minds are trying to get some basic education in those refugee tents?

While we look at this chaos that religion has inflicted upon humanity, we simply have no strength to empathize with people who bring tragedy upon themselves without regard to their safety for the same reason.

We are sorry but there are better reasons to die !

And no, I am not going to not blame Saudi government for this.

They are morons for opening gates and giving visas when they have no capability to handle pilgrims.

But, we already know that. While the world including you and me are trying to fix them, you stay safe.
My thoughts with the families of the victims.

Sincerely,
Someone who never gets religion.

Some notable incidents include:

  • July 2, 1990: A stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel (Al-Ma'aisim tunnel) leading out from Mecca towards Mina and the Plains of Arafat led to the deaths of 1,426 pilgrims, many of them of Malaysian, Indonesian and Pakistani origin.[2][3]
  • May 23, 1994: A stampede killed at least 270 pilgrims at the stoning of the Devil ritual.
  • April 9, 1998: at least 118 pilgrims were trampled to death and 180 injured in an incident on Jamarat Bridge.[4]
  • March 5, 2001: 35 pilgrims were trampled to death in a stampede during the stoning of the Devil ritual.[5]
  • February 11, 2003: The stoning of the Devil ritual claimed 14 pilgrims' lives.[6]
  • February 1, 2004: 251 pilgrims were killed and another 244 injured in a stampede during the stoning ritual in Mina.[7]
  • January 12, 2006: A stampede during the stoning of the Devil on the last day of the Hajj in Mina killed at least 346 pilgrims and injured at least 289 more. The incident occurred shortly after 13:00 local time, when a busload of travellers arrived together at the eastern access ramps to the Jamarat Bridge. This caused pilgrims to trip, rapidly resulting in a lethal stampede. An estimated two million people were performing the ritual at the time.
  • September 24, 2015: 719 pilgrims were killed and another 800 injured during a stampede in the 2015 Hajj.[8]
