Since this is all about anecdotes might I say that I work for a fourtune 500 company in NY, and we still have some 300 unfilled IT roles for the year ( we don't say it, but we prefer to hire American citizens and permanent residents because of extended paperwork and time involved in hiring a H1b worker)
Om the other hand, stories narrated in this article are so typical where a repetitive job gets automated or outsourced. This is a real human tragedy with not many practical solutions.

I understand space contingencies in a newspaper article, but that opening anecdote left more questions than answers, e.g.:

When it became obvious why the Indian woman was tailing the accountant, why didn't the accountant say something? It was obvious what was going on?

Did she talk to fellow workers about to be laid off about taking some kind of action? Did they talk to a lawyer about a class-action suit?

Did the accountant reach out to a government agency about abuse of the program? Did she contact an elected representative?

And since this has happened, did she do any of those things?

Amid all the hand-wringing noticed on this message board, let me mention that all these H1-B and L1 visitors pay Social Security and Medicare taxes and they will never see this money back in their life time. They will be back in India when they retire, and they will be not be able to claim it. Where is the fairness in that?

I came from India, went to School here, got my MBA and worked in IT. This trickle that started around Y2k has become major force. Most of the companies that work in this sphere, both American Employers and Indian Outsourcing Companies work out of greed. The CEOS and upper management of the American Companies want to cut costs so that can line their pockets. The Indian, outsourcing companies want to enrich themselves, so they bring a labor force that is partially trained. Whenever, an employee gets into a rut, with no progress in their jobs, they are going to see that their jobs are replaced either by automation or by cheap labor from elsewhere. This is a cycle and it is going to go on. As we say in India, it is based on your karma, what you do to others will be done to you. So, while you are employed, improve your job skills, find a niche that nobody can take away. If you are in Accounting, learn everything around you, so that you can kick your employer and get out before they decide to do it to you.
