HYDERABAD: Scores of Telanagana Jagruti activists led by its president, K Kavitha, today tried to barge into Lalitha Kala Toranam where the Nandi awards presentation was in progress, in protest against the movie ‘Tulasi’ depicting Telangana in `poor light.’ They also raised slogans against actress Jhansi, for performing the role of ‘Kokapet aunty’ in the movie, which they said, only hurt the sentiments of Telangana people. She received the best female comedian award for her performance.

The Nampally police promptly arrested Kavitha, daughter of TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao along with her followers, including those from the youth wing of TRS.

It was around 8.30 p.m, when Kavitha along with her followers descended on the premises. The awards presentation ceremony was in progress for which Hhome Minister K Jana Reddy and Information Minister Anam Ramanarayan Reddy were the chief guests. Among other dignitaries, former Union Minister Dasari Narayana Rao was also present.

Even as Ramnarayan Reddy was addressing the gathering, suddenly a group of protestors raised Telangana slogans interrupting the proceedings for a brief time.

Actress Jhansi was declared best female comedian for her performance as `Kokapet aunty.’ Forcing their way towards the dias, they raised slogans charging the film industry for portraying Telangana in a poor light The actress however, did not turn up for the event and the organisers have not formally announced her name in the awardees’ list.

However, the police who were deployed there in large numbers, resorted to mild caning to bring the situation under control. They bundled the protestors in vans and drove them to Nampally police station. Later, Kavita was let off. Speaking to reporters, Kavita charged the State Government of honouring people who were portraying Telangana in poor light. “We were protesting against the role of Kokapet auny but the Government, instead of taking any action, is honouring such people,” she said.

She further alleged that some TV channels were also joining the Government in projecting Telangana in a bad taste.
