While two of India’s most marketable players — Sachin Tendulkar and M.S. Dhoni — remain sought after, team owners are ready to ditch other heavyweights. Nobody wants to spend all $7 miliion (the salary cap) just because they can.
Even as rumour mills worked overtime in pushing Tendulkar towards the Pune franchise owned by the Sahara Group, Mumbai Indians would do everything within their capacity to retain the master.

“What Sachin brings to the table is not mere runs,” says T.A. Sekar, director-cricket, Mumbai Indians. “His commitment to the game and the franchise is huge. The team has a lot to gain from his good work ethics. In spite of the gruelling schedule he did not miss a single practice session. Some qualities are irreplaceable.”

It is alleged that the little master was offered a cool 5 per cent of the Kochi franchise (an approximate value of Rs 85 crore) as sweat equity. Reports from Pune also hint that he may be wooed by the Sahara Group. But Mumbai Indians and Reliance Industries are not ready to lose the biggest brand of them all. Tendulkar’s affinity for Mumbai is only too well known and it will be nothing short of a miracle if he is persuaded to move out of Mumbai.
