The Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TS-Genco) has stepped up work on its ongoing thermal projects with the stage-two of Kakatiya Thermal Power Station (KTPS) at Bhupalapalli in Warangal district set to be commissioned by the end of October first week.

Lighting up of the boiler for the 600-MW unit had already been done in May and it is approaching the stage of commencing in-firm power generation, sources in TS-Genco stated. Addition of the 600 MW-capacity is expected to reduce financial burden on the government in the form of spot purchase of power to that extent and also as a boost to the government promise to supply uninterrupted nine-hour power to the farming sector in day time from April next.

The Genco has also commissioned two units of the 6 x 40-MW Lower Jurala hydro-electric project recently and power generation in one of the units was synchronised to the grid from October 2. There is no water to run the second unit, though it is also ready for generation, the sources said. The consumption of power by agriculture sector is on the rise and the total demand of energy has been ranging between 140 and 150 million units (MU) during the last one week. In the absence water for irrigation in major reservoir, the Genco authorities are expecting the demand to go up further in the coming weeks and months for cultivation of rabi crops with the help groundwater. When contacted, Chairman and Managing Director of TS-Genco D. Prabhakar Rao told The Hindu that their plans to commission the thermal plants at Bhupalapalli, Jaipur and Manugur are on course with the Bhupalapalli going on stream in about a month’s time. “Boiler light-up for first unit of 2 x 600 MW Singareni thermal power plant at Jaipur in Adilabad was done two months back and we are confident of commissioning it before the implementation of nine-hour day-time supply to agriculture sector,” he stated.

Besides, arrangements were in progress for another 500 MW supply from the solar sector soon, Mr. Prabhakar Rao said.
