Story Of An Aspiring Producer

A businessman got in touch with me while I was raising money for Pesarattu. We spoke. We met. He is interested to be a producer. But wanted to proceed alone and did not want to be part of "crowd-funding".

In our long conversation I tried to share my experience and knowledge of how film industry functions and promised to support him if he wants to starts off his own production.

He vanished for 6 months. In between I tried to contact him and he was not reachable. I ran in to him couple of months back, in Prasad labs. The moment he saw me, he rushed towards me and said, he needs my help. I was more than willing to.

Than he explained that, he produced a film by spending 2.5 crores with new comers. I was pleased. He took out his laptop and shown me a trailers and few song clippings from the film. The visuals are worst than many of the short films that are being made these days and only saving grace was songs that are shot in Bankok. And performances of the actors were so pathetic that, I couldn't even sit through the 2 minute long trailer.

He asked, what shall we do to release the film. I did not know how to respond. I took a pause, by than he started speaking in a hurried tone. "I know that I crewed- up. One manager convinced me in to producing this film and I am taken for a ride. But now I have no going back. At least, if I can release the film, I can save my face."

I controlled myself and reasonably tried to tell him that, to promote this film he would need another 15-25 lakhs and to release he has to spend 35 lakhs of his own money by paying rents, publicity and print costs. Instead of wasting another 50 lakhs and more, its better he stops at it and go back home to his safety.

I could see tears in his eyes. I tried to control mine and walked off from there.
