Bruce Lee The Fighter – Movie Review

Rating : 3.25/5Cast : Ram Charan, Rakul Preet Singh, Arun Vijay, Kriti KharbandaDirected by : Srinu VaitlaProduced by : DVV DanayyaMusic : S.S. ThamanRelease Date : October 16, 2015

Ram Charan starrer Bruce Lee – The Fighter narrates the story of a stuntman, Karthik, played by Ram Charan, who takes inspiration from martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. Karthik is the living embodiment of Bruce Lee’s famous quote, ‘I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.’ We see it being reinforced in multiple ways, especially in the way which Karthik comes to the rescue of his sister and helps her in achieving her goal to become an IAS officer.

Directed by Sreenu Vaitla, the film is a family entertainer, with a generous dose of family emotions and some crackling action sequences, which justify both the movie’s title as well as Ram Charan’s image as an action hero. We are told that Karthik hails from a middle-class, where his father, played by Rao Ramesh, doesn’t earn enough to send both his kids in good schools. As a result, Karthik decides to give up on studies, so that his father’s dream can be fulfilled through his elder sister, Kavya (Kriti Kharbanda). While Karthik ends up becoming a stuntman when he grows up and his sister on the verge of reaching her goal, the two encounter a huge problem in the form of his father’s boss (Sampath). The rest of the story is about how Karthik overcomes the problem posed by Sampath, who nearly gets their entire family killed.

First things first, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s cameo, which was one of the most talked about aspects of the film prior to its release, is totally worth the hype. The actor’s charisma and dazzling screen presence hasn’t diminished a bit, despite his long hiatus from big screen. It’s quite obvious that Sreenu Vaitla and the rest of the team took a lot of care to set the right platform for his cameo and it’ll leave many whistling with joy. While the film’s story and the screenplay format has a distinct Sreenu Vaitla’s signature to it, there are few subplots, especially those involving Ram Charan-Rao Ramesh and Ram Charan-Kriti Kharbanda, which strike the right chord emotionally. Rakul Preet, who plays Ram Charan’s romantic interest in the film as Ria, looks drop dead gorgeous in the songs and she strikes a good onscreen chemistry with Ram Charan, especially in the first half of the film. Kriti Kharbanda, who plays Ram Charan’s sister, has a wonderful screen presence and after a point, you wish there was more screen time dedicated to the siblings since their bond works so well.

On the other hand, given the huge star cast that the film boasts of, there are plenty of others like Brahmanandam, Jayaprakash Reddy, Sayaji Shinde, Saptagiri, Tisca Chopra, Vennela Kishore who struggle to find their footing in the larger scheme of things. The dialogues are dime a dozen and the comedy scenes leave a deja vu effect; however, where the film works quite well is in terms of its action sequences. Arun Vijay, who plays one of the baddies in the film, is quite expressive, despite his short screen time.

While it isn’t the first time that Ram Charan has done a film like this, but he does leave an impression of trying to embrace a new body language and he brings plenty of authenticity to the stunts and he totally justifies his characterisation as a stuntman. And it goes without saying that, he dances like a dream and Rakul Preet too compliments him quite well.

Thaman’s music works pretty well and the adrenaline pumping music is in right proportions to get Ram Charan and Rakul grooving. At a runtime of close to 155 minutes, Bruce Lee – The Fighter is exactly what the trailers had promised to be. In the end, Chiranjeevi’s cameo and Ram Charan’s action & dance sequences will surely leave the fan in you hooting with joy. Maybe that’s what matters the most.
