Ulli gadda is correct one, vellulli paya antaru (garlic), AP lo ulli gadda anakunda paya antaru, don't know why don't gadda be used.
Aalu gadda ni bangala dhumpa antaru.

rule # 2: any thing that grows on roots of tree and inside the earth is called dumpa or gadda in telugu....Ex. Ulli gadda, Kanda gadda (beet root), bangala dumpa (potato), chaama dumpa (taro root) etc.

 

tomato is not vegetable....it is a fruit. so it is called as such just like aaple...

Afaik, onion is a leafy vegetable where the bottom of the leaves are bulged, fleshy and used as vegetable. It is rich in sulphur which is the main source in our food. It's not a fruit to be called as kaaya or a root to be called as gadda.just bulged leaf bottom. Hence called as ulli-paayalu which means pile of leaves. That's it.
