NEW DELHI: Despite being an IT superpower, India continues to slip in its supercomputing processing abilities behind countries such as the US, France, Germany and China. India’s fastest supercomputer, Tata Sons-owned EKA, has now slipped from being ninth-fastest supercomputer in the world to the 33th spot, in the latest rankings of the world's 500 fastest supercomputers.

In contrast, China’s newly installed Nebulae supercomputer at National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen (NSCS) in Shenzhen , has become the world's second fastest, just behind Jaguar, the world's fastest located at National Center for Computational Sciences in the US. Jaguar is used by the US Department of Energy.

In an annual ranking of world's fastest 500 supercomputers compiled by Top500.org, US has again clearly emerged as the winner. The United States owns about 282 out of the 500 supercomputers, followed by the UK at 38 systems, Japan (18 systems), Germany and China with 24 systems each.
