The Nadigar Sangam (Tamil: நடிகர் சங்கம்; English: Actors' association) is a non-profit organisation consisting of all actors by profession in the state of Tamil Nadu, based in Chennai, India. Formed in 1952, the group has acted as a voice for filmmakers caught in controversies, has a charitable trust fund to provide pension to eligible veteran retired actors, and have collectively protested numerous social and political issues. The group is sometimes formally known as the South Indian Film Artistes' Association (SIFAA).

Elections in the Nadigar Sangam are held once every three years to determine the president of the group.^[1] R. Sarathkumar, who had been elected unopposed three times since 2006 when former president Vijayakanth stepped down, was ousted after an election on 18 October 2015,^[2] by Nassar. Vishal was elected as secretary, beating out the incumbent Radha Ravi who served alongside Sarathkumar.^[3][4][5] The election was supervised by a retired judge under the orders of the Madras High Court.^[6]

 

The Nadigar Sangam was formed in 1952 by M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, M. R. Radha and other actors during the period. The team purchased over 2,000 square feet (190 m²) of land on Habibulla Road in T Nagar, an affluent neighbourhood in Madras (now Chennai). Upon Ramachandran's appointment as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977, he approved the Nadigar Sangam's construction of a new building, comprising a preview theatre, a gym and an office space.^[7]

On 5 May 1987, a public charitable trust called the Nadigar Sangam Charitable Trust was registered, with founders of the trust being R. S. Manohar, N. S. Krishnan, and Radha Ravi. The trust was established to provide educational, medical and other forms of monetary assistance to needy members of the Nadigar Sangam.^[8]

In 2002, president Vijayakanth organised "Star Night" stage shows in Malaysia and Singapore to fundraise for the Nadigar Sangam's accumulated debt, which was at approximately ₹4.5 crores.^[7] In 2006, after Vijayakanth launched his own political party, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, actor S. Ve. Shekhar requested that active politicians should not be allowed to head the group. R. Sarathkumar was chosen to replace Vijayakanth.^[7][9]

In May 2008, the group organised a one-day hunger strike opposing the Karnataka government's controversial plan of the Hogenakkal Integrated Drinking Water Project and the abuse of Tamils in the state of Karnataka. In September 2008, Sarathkumar called upon a one-day hunger strike, protesting the deaths of several Tamils in Sri Lanka and the ongoing Sri Lankan Civil War. It was among the first of a series of protests against the Sri Lankan Civil War that occurred the following year across the world.

On 7 October 2009, Sarathkumar launched a rally against the Tamil Nadu-based newspaper Dina Malar for publishing a news article claiming Indian pornographic actress Bhuvaneshwari had exposed to police several Tamil actresses were involved in illegal sex-work. The actresses listed on the newspaper, with their photos, were Namitha, Seetha, Nalini, Anju, Shakeela, Manjula Vijayakumar and Sripriya. General secretary Radha Ravi filed a defamation complaint to Chennai Police, resulting in the arrest of the newspaper's editor B. Lenin.^[10] Journalists, including The Hindu editor N. Ram, condemned Lenin's arrest as only being done to appease film stars and demanded his release.^[11] Lenin was later released on bail.^[12][13]

In 2010, Sarathkumar and his wife Raadhika Sarathkumar, who were respectively the star and co-producer of the film Jaggubhai, held a press conference condemning the acts of pirated films being uploaded on the Internet, after it was discovered that an unedited full-length version of the film had been uploaded online.^[14]

Election day[edit]

The election took place at St. Ebbas Girls' Higher Secondary School in Mylapore, Chennai on 18 October 2015 amid a strong police presence. It was reported that 240 members were denied the right to vote, including veteran actress Sachu and Mansoor Ali Khan, as they failed to pay their membership fees. The latter was already expelled from the association for that reason. Ambika expressed disappointment over the fact that actors from other states who have done several films in Tamil not being allowed to vote since they do not possess a membership card.^[35]

After casting his vote, Rajinikanth warned that the winning team must fulfill their promises or else they must resign. He also opined that the association should be renamed as the "Tamil Nadu Nadigar Sangam" rather than South Indian Artists' Association.^[36] His idea of renaming was also supported by Nassar and T. Rajendar.^[37] Kamal Haasan on the other hand wished for a single national association called the Indian Nadigar Sangam.^[38]

At 12:15 IST, The Hindu reported that Vishal was involved in an altercation with R. Sarathkumar. He was later taken to a caravan with a doctor.^[39] Vishal stood before a group of reporters, visibly distressed and palpitating, stating that "irrespective of what happens the elections will not be cancelled" and claiming that he prayed his attacker to spare him and another actress. Moments later actress Sangeetha revealed to Puthiya Thalaimurai TV that she was physically and verbally abused by Sarathkumar and that one of his aides attacked Vishal who only attempted to protect her.^[40]
