1950: Most Industralized state - 2010: One of the Poorest states in India

In the 1950s, the Indian state of West Bengal was one of the most industrialized states in the country. Bidhan Roy, its first chief minister, founded large industrial plants in Durgapur, Asansol, Kalyani, Howrah and Calcutta proper. In the 1960s and 1970s, disruptions by the Bangladesh War, the Naxal movement and militant trade unionism by leftist parties led by Jyoti Basu slowed down industrial development. Consequently other states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka attracted industrial investment and experienced job growth.

Leaders should be driven by ideologies but more so by people..But that does not mean ideologies at one point in time hold true after a hundred years..Communists r too stubborn to change and are driven by ideology more than people..While the interesting thing about communists in Bengal is that, they have been very quick to adapt the political culture of manipulating elections and mastered the art of staying in power..They could adapt very quickly for winning, unfortunately when it comes to people's welfare, they stuck to their ideology  !q# !q# !q#
