Chandrasekhar Rao in a case relating to the award of a contract when he was the Union Minister of Labour, Employment and Training in 2006.A special team examined Mr. Rao at his Hyderabad residence to know why the proposal for allotting the contract to the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), a Central agency, was cancelled and awarded to the Executive Engineer of the A.P. Fisheries Department.The contract was for the construction of ESI Hospitals across the State, CBI sources told The Hindu on Tuesday.Substandard workSuspecting substandard quality of work, the ESI Corporation initiated a probe in 2007-08. However, based on the source information report, the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch registered a case in 2011. Relying on a report of experts roped in from one of the IITs that the construction had resulted in a loss of at least Rs. 5 crore, investigators launched an in-depth probe.
