Indian cricketer Amit Mishra was summoned by the Bengaluru police on Tuesday for questioning after he was booked for the alleged physical assault of a woman in his hotel room in the city last month.

“We have shot off a notice, summoning India cricketer Amit Mishra for allegedly physically assaulting and physically abusing a woman in his hotel room last month,” deputy commissioner of police, Central, Sandeep Patil told reporters in Bengaluru.

PTI had earlier quoted Patil as saying Amit Mishra had been summoned for alleged sexual assault but has since redacted it to say it was physical assault.

Another police officer told Hindustan Times on condition of anonymity that they had gathered enough evidence against Mishra in the past one month.

The police said they had collected CCTV footage from the hotel that showed Mishra assaulting the woman. The police also said the incident took place in front of the hotel’s staff members who have testified in the case.

On a complaint from the woman, Mishra has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 328 (causing hurt with intent to commit an offence), he said. The complaint was lodged on September 25.

The police have asked Mishra to appear before them in a week’s time, Patil said, adding strict action would be taken if he failed to comply with the summons.

Mishra is part of the Indian squad for the first two Tests against South Africa. He plays for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy tournament.

The woman had lodged a complaint in the Ashok Nagar police station, alleging that the cricketer had sexually assaulted her when she went to see him in his hotel room.

Mishra was in the city last month for training when he had met the woman, Patil said.
