nako_job_kavali Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 I once attempted the Telugu version of Karva Chaut, 'Varalakshmi Vratham' On any given day, even when I was working on final projects, and working hard to meet deadlines, I'd call my husband twice a day when he is at work. But that particular day, he was the last thing on my mind,LOL ! By the end of the evening, I already decided never to do this again because I felt both physically and mentally sick. After he came home, I joked saying that he now has a longer life, thanks to me. And I added, 'I should do this every week like in those old movies. You might become immortal, who knows?' My husband is not opinionated. Even if he is, he doesn't express them. He just let people do their own thing. So, probably that's why he has been holding it in. But, he didn't anymore. He said something so wonderful then and I am so glad he did. He said, 'I don't know if there is a God. I choose to believe there is, that's all. But what I know for sure is that there is Science. And according to Science, happy people live longer. It's a proven fact. I don't know how anyone can really be happy when someone they love is going a whole day without eating on top of doing such a tedious ritual. I didn't get a lot of work done today because I kept thinking about you and if you needed any help. And, I just feel bad that you think you should do this for me. You've never been ritualistic' True. I've never been. I used to sneak out on the mornings of Ganesh Chaturdhi and have breakfast on streets because I couldn't take my Grandma's nagging if I asked for food. I remembered how my mom's sister sneaked me Puris on the day of 'Satynarayana Vratam', usually when the new couple is asked not to eat strictly. No rituals parted me from my beloved food,TBH. But, I also remember taking Ayyappa Deeksha and walking on hot coals against advise of everyone because I was influenced by the environment around me. Mass hysteria, may be. Fickle minded, may be. Human, I think so. Now, even before speaking to my husband, I know that this is an extremely sexist tradition. It's just that my mom never insisted that we do all that mumbo jumbo. So the curiosity got better of me. And the fact that all the married women around me doing it and judging me for not, didn't help either. But, why am I saying this? May be because I am trying the infamous self-dabba. Or may be I am trying to share my experiences, because, "facebook" Or may be I am trying to counter the 'If you don't do this or that, your husband is going to die' posts that morons post on my news feed. Or mostly because, I am telling you that you don't need to prove yourself or give into temptations how holy or unholy they may be if you don't believe in them. If someone is judging you for not doing what they are doing, be it partying in a pub or going without food/water for some insane reason, may be you are the Galileo ! Because, this sure as hell is a Woman's Renaissance in the words of one intelligent woman :) P.S: To all who'd argue that occasional fasting is actually good for health, well, then shouldn't your husband be the one doing it given that you are doing this for him to live longer and all? Or to anyone who asks if I think the same about fasting during Ramadan, heck yes! But, I can't speak from my own experiences drawn about Islam/Christianity or any religion that's not mine, however insane few rituals of theirs may be.
