Renowned actor, Kamal Haasan, refused to join the protest against "rising intolerance" in the country and said that he would not return his National Awards at an event held in Delhi on November 3, 2015.

"I will not return my National Award and insult the government," said the actor, who has won four National Awards.

Haasan, who has also received the prestigious Padmashri and Padma Bhusan awards explained his stance by saying, "Nothing will happen by returning awards. There are sensible politicians in every party and returning awards is a futile exercise."

He further stated that there are other ways to get attention and added that there should be debate on intolerance in about five years. "This intolerance is what divided the nation (in 1947). It should not divide the nation again," Kamal Haasan said. His comments come a day after Shah Rukh Khan had spoken about intolerance.

A number of writers, filmmakers, historians and scientists have returned their national honours to protest against recent incidents like the Dadri lynching, beef row and ink attacks.
