Healthcare major Apollo Hospitals sees bright prospects of Visakhapatnam becoming a medical tourism hub like Hyderabad.

“The new super-speciality hospital built by the Apollo Group at Health City in an area of 10 acres with three lakh square ft. built-up space at a cost of Rs.100 crore will be thrown open to the nation by this month-end,” Apollo Hospitals president (Hospitals Division) K. Hari Prasad said on Sunday.

In an interview, he told The Hindu that initially the hospital would have 250 beds.

It will be increased to 1,000 beds in phases. The hospital will have a helipad and other facilities. It has plans to develop a resort to promote medical tourism as a joint venture.

“After we took the lead in creating a super-speciality hospital in Hyderabad, the twin cities slowly emerged as a hub for medical tourism. NRIs from 165 countries today throng Hyderabad for medical tourism. Similarly, because of its wonderful beaches and valley, we are confident that Vizag can attract people from the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia,” he said.

Citing the success story of Thailand, he mentioned how it became a big destination for cosmetic and preventive medicine after the government there positioned itself to promote health tourism.

Now India, Singapore, and partly Malaysia are doing well.

“I am sure with the Navya Andhra Pradesh Government announcing its focus to promote medical tourism, Vizag will also become a major hub in a few years,” he said.

Dr. Hari Prasad said when a person comes for treatment, his family also accompanies him.

Hence, recreation facilities like beach tourism, water sports, wellness centres, food courts, and malls are required. From industry’s point of view, he said the hospital sector was not getting a fair deal from the government compared to other sectors.
