Kerala Becomes First State To Introduce Policy For Transgenders

Kerala has become the first state in the country to introduce policy for safeguarding the rights of the marginalised community. It is a historic move by the state government as its policy has been aimed to raise the standard of their livings on par with others and ensuring them equal access to social and economic opportunities, right to equal treatment under the law, right to live life without violence and right in all decision making bodies.The Kerala Department of Social Justice has issued the policy keeping in mind the Supreme Court judgement (2014) and the recent survey report in the state.
It is to be mentioned here that the number of people identifying themselves as transgender is estimated to be over 25,000 in Kerala.
