I started my career as Java programmer and recently switched to salesforce and below is my experience so far:

1) Yes, you will get better billing rate compared to average Java Programmer.I don't know why is that but if you ask my opinion salesforce is very easy to pick up for someone with Java programming background.

2) Projects are short term. I have seen Java programmers working in companies for years as contractors but the same is not true with salesforce.

3) Salesforce is a tool not a platform that means in the future some other tool(like sugar CRM) will overtake Salesforce and then we need to switch that technology and sugar CRM uses php.

4) The Apex programming language used in salesforce is a proprietary language and works only on salesforce platform.
