The passport site maintained by the NIC (National Informatics Centre) has been hacked by a 7-member gang which colluded with insiders in the passport office to siphon off money in the Tatkal scheme. The chief accused was Lathadhar Rao who has a PG diploma in computer applications. The others arrested were Shaik Subhani, 34, of Narsaraopet, passport agents Mohammed Jahangir, 45, Bhooma Srihari, 56, Giddada Chinna, 29, Syed Valiuddin, 30, and Kondareddy Penchal Reddy, 35, all residents of twin cities. After hacking into the NIC server, Lathadhara Rao submitted passport applications with confirmed dates for the Tatkal scheme. The agents mailed the passport applications to Subhani, which were uploaded and submitted by Lathadhara Rao. The agents were charging Rs 3,000 to 5,000 to each applicant, out of which Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 were paid to Subhani who used to pay half of the amount to Lathadhara Rao. The gang reportedly uploaded around 3,000 passport applications illegally.
