AP tops list of crimes against women

Sri Laxmi, Lakshmi Sujatha, Ayesha Meera, Bhargavi, Swapnika and now, Sameera. Brutal and savage attacks on women are happening in the State in quick succession. The reasons might differ but in most cases, women are victimised by the lovelorn or the greedy.

The latest victim is Sameera, a 16-yearold girl from the Old City. She left her home to repay the loan amount to one Arshad, a moneylender, who pushed her down from the first landing of Charminar.

She died yesterday while undergoing treatment in a hospital.

In December last, two students of KITS engineering college - K Swapnika and T Praneetha - were attacked with acid by the former’s spurned lover and his friends when they were returning home on a two-wheeler. While Swapnika died after struggling for life for about 20 days with severe burns, her friend Praneetha managed to survive, recuperate.

The accused Srinivas and his friends were gunned down by the Warangal police when they `tried to escape from the custody’ later.

Even after the `stern action’ of police against the accused in Swapnika’s case,

attacks on women do not seem to abate. Andhra Pradesh has seen about 14 cases of violent attacks against women in 2008 alone, and jilted lovers were the villains in these incidents.

Upcoming actress Bhargavi of `Ashta Chemma’ fame presents a case of jealousy.

She was stabbed to death at her Banjara Hills residence in December last by her live-in partner Praveen Kumar who later committed suicide. Praveen is learnt to have killed Bhargavi due to jealousy as she neglected him after her rise in filmdom.

Similar is the case of television news reader B Lakshmi Sujatha who was murdered by her friend G Chandrasekhar, who disapproved her closeness with her colleagues. She was intoxicated, raped and later killed in a lodge at Governorpet in

Vijayawada in February 2007. Probably, no person can ever forget the ghastly orders of MCA student Sri Laxmi and B Pharma student Ayesha Meera in Vijayawada. In 2004, Sri Laxmi was hacked to death by her classmate Manohar in the exam hall of her college for rejecting his marriage proposal.

Ayesha Meera, (19), was raped and murdered at her hostel in Ibrahimpatnam

of Vijayawada on December 27, 2007.

In April 2008, a spurned lover attacked an Intermediate student with knife in

Kurnool district while an engineering student in Vijayawada slit the throat of

his collegemate after she rejected his advances. In November 2007, a college lecturer in Srikakulam district threw acid on a BSc final year student for spurning his advances.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics published in 2007-08, AP is `a highly unsafe state for women.’ The State topped the list of crimes against women with 24,783 cases, accounting for 13 per cent of the total incidents in 2007. Of these, 3,316 cases were sexual harassment cases putting AP on top of other states.

The State has also accounted for about 83 per cent (about 1,000 cases) of the total cases against indecent representation of women. Among 35 cities with a population of more than one million, Hyderabad  recorded 1,755 cases next to New Delhi which registered highest cases of crimes against women - 4,134 cases.

About 13,000 cases on human rights violation against women are still pending in Andhra Pradesh.

While the human rights activists allege police inaction, the police complain about lack of manpower and increasing crimes across the State in addition to the extremist and terrorist problems.

Even as the blame game continues, there seems to be no end to atrocities against women in a State where a woman is now the Home Minister.
