ask him to go for data analytics, and other t-SQL technologies the more database concepts you learn the more are opportunities
And he should be open to learn anything not just SQL server.
don't choose technology just because it's easy

Yeah but to start with he should be in a position to install database engine and management studio right. Even I know development and MSBI suite will give basic outlook and can guide on how to learn where to learn.
Basically no one teaches you full technology only at job you will figure out the real scenarios and work out accordingly.
