I heard a variation of this same prejudice, some 10yrs back. after 2005 floods in chennai.

 

I was on phone asking how my parents were doing, and how things were in Chennai. Suddenly for some reason my father mentions that relief materials were on the way from Andhra.

 

like WTF? I reminded him that he doesn't have to justify his making money off Chennai by tomtomming how Andhra was helping Chennai.

 

Then he went on a tirade. a little bit like how the TS did here about how AP is helping Chennai, and without the water it gives, Chennai would die of thirst. How telugus are the first to respond to every calamity and how tamilians don't care.

 

Every one of his pronouncements can be easily and ruthlessly put down as ramblings of a middle aged man. But instead I chose to not speak to him again. I largely managed to achieve it.

 

I know many polite and well meaning posters here would agree with my father. Some time back one of them even pointed out how AP supplies Chennai much needed water, when it doesn't have to. But I chose to let his ignorant statement be. Needless to say, I would treat others who make similar claims with disdain.

I know its my upper class Chennai ego speaking, and many poor people who've lost much may differ with me. But over the past week, I've come to know how relief work is financed. And I think, Chennai can do without the money others have offered it.

 

Feel free to keep it yourselves, if you think that Tamils are conspiring against you, or don't care about you. Chennai can take care of itself.
