The city is all set to see the setting up of three more high-profile institutions — Petroleum University, Indian School of Mines (ISM), and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).

Sufficient ground work has already been done on the three projects.

The Petroleum University will come up on the lines of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) at Dehradun in Uttarakhand. The UPES will mentor the new institution and is expected to commence classes from the next academic year.

It is learnt that the site has already been inspected by representatives from the Government of India and the UPES. According to District Collector N. Yuvaraj, 150 acres of land at Anthakapalli in Sabbavaram mandal has been identified and advance possession order received from the Revenue and Industry departments.

The university’s temporary campus will be located in Andhra University, says AU Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Ranju. Hostels will be located in private buildings till the new building comes up at the site.

The ISM will come on 300 acres of land at Annavaram village in Bheemunipatnam mandal. ISM-Dhanbad will be the mentor institution.

According to Mr. Yuvaraj, the site has been inspected by the Registrar of ISM-Dhanbad and a report sent to the Central Government seeking permission to start the institution.

A team led by Ashok Kumar, a professor of IIFT-Delhi, has inspected the 100 acres of land earmarked for the institution near Gambheeram, which is close to the land allotted to IIM-Visakhapatnam. The district administration has shown five places for establishing the temporary campus of the institution.

Mr. Yuvaraj says that this project needs to be pursued as the file is pending in Delhi.

Knowledge city

These apart, the State Government has identified 1,000 acres of land at Sabbavaram mandal in the district to set up a Knowledge City.

According to HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, infrastructures such as roads, water, drainage, and power will be provided by the government in the proposed education hub.

“These institutions address the education needs in a holistic way,” says AU Registrar V. Umamaheshwara Rao.
