Woman Investigated For Hate Crime After Attacking Muslim Men

A California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation employee is being investigated for a possible a hate crime after an incident involving two Muslim men over the weekend.

Denise Slader, the CDCR employee, was caught on video confronting two men of Middle Eastern descent while they were praying in Lake Chabot Regional Park in the San Francisco Bay Area, telling them: “Your God is Satan,” “Allah is Satan,” and “the Quran is evil.”

 When Rasheed Albeshari, one of the men Slader was targeting, began recording the altercation, she hit him with an umbrella and threw coffee in his face.

“After praying, this lady approached us and started yelling at us that we're brainwashed for believing in Allah. ‘Allah is evil,’ she said,” he wrote in the Facebook post.

 

Since sharing the video, Albeshari has received messages of support in the comments section.

"I'm so sorry, Rasheed. This happened right down the street from our house — we live in Castro Valley — and it sickens me that you would be treated so rudely for practicing your faith. I hope we can reiterate that she does NOT AT ALL represent the rest of your neighbors. Peace," wrote one user.

"I'm very, very sorry u had to endure this type of incident with this very ignorant and stupid lady!! She needs to educate herself on Muslims and Allah ... She is just one of very many ignorant and scared Americans that are very closed minded individuals!!" wrote another.

 

 

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, police from the East Bay Regional Park District arrived shortly afterward, and took statements from those involved. Slader was not arrested, and the incident has been turned to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office, which will decide whether or not to go forward with charges.

San Francisco Chronicle also reports that prosecutors at the DA's office will investigate the incident as a hate crime. The DA's office was not immediately available for comment.

Luis Patino, a spokesman with the CDCR, told Mashable that Slader currently remains employed in an administrative capacity with the Division of Adult Parole Operations as a program technician.

"She has been with the department for approximately 10 years," Patino said. "All employees are afforded due process. At this time there is no change in her status."

He added, "CDCR expects its employees to abide by a code of conduct that includes respecting the rights of others regardless of personal characteristics including ancestry and religion. In addition to the police investigation, an internal CDCR investigation into the incident is ongoing."

Carolyn Jones, a spokeswoman for the park service, told the Chronicle, “This is a very busy popular park in a diverse area. It’s unfortunate this happened. People should be able to enjoy the park in peace. This is unfortunate especially in light of what’s happening nationally right now.”

In recent weeks, the U.S. has seen an increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric, which reached a nadir with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the country.

The American Civil Liberties Union has reported an increase in reports of discrimination against Muslims since the attacks in Paris as well as the San Bernardino mass shooting.

Over the weekend, a man who said he was a former Marine called a mosque in St. Louis to threaten its members. The day before that, a Florida mosque was vandalized, its windows broken and furniture overturned. Before that, a Quran was torn up and smeared with feces before being left at the door of a mosque in Texas. Earlier this week, someone left a bloody pig's head outside of a mosque in Philadelphia.

According to Muslim Advocates, a California advocacy group, there have been 32 anti-Muslim threats, shootings and vandalisms in the U.S. since Nov. 13 Paris attacks.

Crisis Text Line, a non-profit organization providing free crisis intervention via SMS message, reports that it saw a substantial increase in November in reports from Muslims in the U.S. who feel anxious or bullied. The organization provides a service allowing anyone in the U.S. to text HELLO to 741-741 for free crisis support via text 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Liz Eddy, director of communications at Crisis Text Line, told Mashable that the number of reports in the month of November alone was 6.6 times the average of any other month on record. News events, like high-profile suicides, can influence the subject matter of texts the line receives. However, this is the first time the organization has observed a nationwide trend in texts related to bullying.

"A high-profile suicide can be linked to an increase in texts related to suicide. What we are seeing now is that hate speech really matters and has real implications on every day Americans," Eddy said.
