ariel Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Osmania University administration and police managed to scuttle the `Beef Festival’ organized by some Leftist Students Unions on Thursday. Intimidated by the extraordinary police bandobast and warnings issued by tops cops, instead of holding the festival out in open in the campus, the students held it inside their hostel rooms where they cooked and relished beef and pork dishes. “We were intimidated and threatened not to organize this festival in a democratic manner. University and police authorities failed to protect our rights in choosing what we eat,’’ K Shanker, one of the organizers of the beef festival said. Shanker, a member of the All India Students Federation, said that the festival was to coincide with the World Human Rights Day to uphold democratic principles and values. “We purchased the beef and brought it to the hostels and cooked in our rooms. Students of three hostels participated in this,’’ Musabir Ali, another organizer, said. Eight organisers of the ‘beef festival’ were also detained while BJP MLA T Raja Singh, who was opposing the the event, was arrested in Hyderabad on Thursday morning, police said. A ‘curfew-like’ situation prevailed on the campus with heavy police security being deployed to prevent any untoward incident. `We detained Raja Singh as a precautionary measure as he threatened to go into the campus and hold a `gau pooja’ to cleanse the campus after the students consumed beef,’’ Deputy Commissioner A Ravinder said.
