Special prayer held in Kolkata for Osama

The Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan mosque here, Maulana Nurur Rehman Barkati, today held a special Friday prayer for the ‘peace of the soul’ of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

“The special prayer was held as Laden was not given a proper burial and his bullet-riddled body was thrown into the sea in total disrespect of Islam. It was held for the peace of his soul,” All-India Minority Forum president Idris Ali, who took part in the prayer, said.

There were placards at the prayer meet reading ’Disrespect to Holy Quran is intolerable’, he said.

A large number of policemen were deployed around the mosque at Dharamtollah in central Kolkata

Headmaster Beaten, Banned from Madrasa for Asking Pupils to Sing National Anthem

KOLKATA: Kazi Masum Akhtar, the headmaster of Talpukur Aara High Madrasa in the heart of the city, has been banned from its precincts, after being viciously assaulted by maulanas and their henchmen, for training students to sing the national anthem for the Republic Day in the State where Asia’s first Nobel laureate and West Bengal icon Rabindranath Tagore wrote the song.

The Talpukur Aara High Madrasa is a government-recognised school. Many of the radical Muslim clerics who attacked Akhtar are rooting for the ISIS, say sources. So far, Akhtar has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Governor and the chairman of State Minorities Commission six times, but to no avail. He records his attendance at a state government education department office to draw his salary.

The maulvis have dubbed the national anthem “sacrilege” and a “Hindutva song” and issued a fatwa against Akhtar. He was also beaten up with iron rods in March, resulting in a severe head injury that left him months in hospital. His skull was split. Since then Akhtar has not been able to set foot in the area—not just the madrasa—though he was hired through a State Government interview. A fatwa has been issued against him, preventing him from entering the school unless he wore the traditional Muslim attire of kurta, short pyjamas and grew a beard, the length of which would be decided by the madrasa’s maulanas.

Clean-shaven Akhtar, who is comfortable wearing shirts and trousers, is bemused by the fatwa. The maulvis have asked him to send them photos each week, to examine the progress of his beard’s growth. They have said singing the “Hindu” national anthem and hoisting the Tricolour in an Islamic teaching institution are anti-Islamic.

Another act of Akhtar that angered the maulvis was his support for the education of Muslim girls. He persuaded parents of his girl students to let their daughters continue their studies and publicly denounce child marriage. Before being assaulted, he had started counselling poor Muslim parents not to marry off their minor daughters to old Muslim men.

The Kolkata Police Commissioner has written to the Minorities Commission, stating that he was not in a position to provide security to Akhtar as “his presence in the area might lead to communal tension”.

Is Malda a mini-Pakistan – Bengali Media Roundup

700x420xmalda_5-700x420.jpg.pagespeed.ic

At a time when “Intolerance” was the dominant flavor of the season, when major cities across India saw rallies by Islamists demanding death penalty for blasphemy there was hardly a murmur in the mainstream media. That India saw Pakistan style “death for blasphemy” chants did not unsettle anyone enough to return any awards. That secular India criminalised speech  “deemed to be blasphemous”did not choke anybody’s liberalism.

And here we are several weeks later with a mob of Muslims in Malda not only protesting “blasphemous speech” but sending a loud and clear message to the rest of India with their violence.

What exactly happened in Malda

Clashes erupted last Sunday at Sujapur area under Kaliachak Police Station, following a protest rally by a Muslim organization. Members of the fringe group set a dozen of vehicles on fire, including that of police, BSF and private vehicles, and ransacked many residents. The clashes broke out when the fringe group, which was protesting against Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari for his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed, saw a bus enter their way on National Highway 34. The protesters attacked the bus and set it ablaze. The passengers in that bus somehow managed to get off the bus unhurt. The incident further aggravated as the furious mob torched Kaliachak Police Station and set on fire two dozen vehicles. Two persons got injured in this incident.

According to a report in a Bengali daily, Dainik Jugasankha, the Muslim protesters hurled bombs at Kaliachak Police station and set it on fire. The protesters even went on to vandalize the nearest BDO Office and looted some houses. A BSF vehicle that was passing along the National Highway was also torched and destroyed. The National Highway was blocked for several hours, resulting in massive obstruction in road services. The report quoted a Sub-Inspector, who broke down while recounting the horrific incident. He said, “We have never faced such incident. We are extremely terrified. We have informed to our higher authority and now waiting for them to take action.”

Muslims target Hindu houses:

The report also said that the protesters ransacked six Hindu houses at Silampur area and set them ablaze. The report quoted a Hindu businessman from Silampur area as saying, “Since morning the violence erupted centring a protest rally. Hindu houses have been torched and set ablaze. We have been hiding since to protect ourselves. Police haven’t taken any step.”

Although the incident took for a worse shape, however it remained unnoticed for a prompt coverage by the main stream media, except a selective few. It was also surprising to see Bengali newspapers like Anandabazar Patrika, Bartaman, and other main streams couldn’t spare a column for this important news.

Historical context of Muslim Violence over pan-Islamist causes

Why blame Malda in Mamata’s Bengal for the seeds of this go all the way back a century when Mahatma Gandhi gave his blessings to Khilafat Movement to mobilize the Muslims of the Indian sub-continent to protest the end of the Caliphate in far away Turkey.

Today if from Malda to Srinagar, pan-Islamist causes outside India provoke Muslim violence in India let us not forget that Gandhi will have to partake a large share of the blame for it.

Malda on the boil – Is Mamata paying attention ?

Malda district, where Muslim accounts for 52.05 per cent of the total population, has lately turned into a hub of violence and communal clashes, and the recent incident is a clear indication of rise of such violence.

Incidents of communal clashes and hooliganism have been surging up since last year with numbers of instances taking a toll on the lives of innocent people living in Kaliachak. Petrified villagers, who have given up on local police officers and Panchayat Chief, awaits relief and assistance to get the area rid of ongoing upheavals.

Last year in November, an internal feud within local Trinamool groups sparked massive violence, turning the area into a battleground with furious mobs hurling bombs and firing at each other. In this incident, one truck driver was killed and one boy got injured.

Another report by Anandabazar Patrika says, how incessant clashes and mob violence on National Highway 34 have furthered trouble for local people, especially daily commuters, and how bus services usually remain affected due to such incidents.

In another incident in Metiaburuz, a headmaster of a madrasa, Kazi Masum Akhtar, who is also a newspaper columnist, was assaulted by Muslim hardliners for “trying to become another Salman Rushdie or Tasleema Nasreen”. Following which the Metiaburuz madrasa managing committee has decided to remove Akhtar from his position. The committee also gained support from local Trinamool leaders.

Serious communal clashes in Malda district of West Bengal have been reported. The violence-related incidents were reported from Sujapur, a Muslim-dominated village in Kaliachak block of Malda district. The reason why the fierce protest erupted in Malda is a statement given by self-proclaimed Hindu leader Kamlesh Tiwari on Prophet Mohammad, that termed him as 'gay'. All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) supporters taking out a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari over his remarks against Prophet Muhammad in New Delhi All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) supporters taking out a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari over his remarks against Prophet Muhammad in New Delhi Here's all you need to know about the recent violence and clashes in Malda, ahead of assembly elections in West Bengal this year. Hindu population is said to be only 30% in Kaliachak area. [Malda Mayhem: 10 people arrested; BJP slams Trinamool for violence] How a Muslim mob of 2.5 lakh strength protested? Anjuman Ahle Sunnatul Jamat (ASJ), a Muslim organisation had held a protest rally to demand the arrest of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari for making derogatory statement against Prophet Mohammad. ASJ members alleged that a BSF vehicle could not made way from the road, where they were rallying. That led to an altercation between the BSF jawans and ASJ members. Kaliachak Police station, block development office and public property were vandalised on Sunday, Jan 3. Several vehicles were set ablaze and over 30 persons including police officers were injured. Vehicles and a NBSTC bus were stranded on NH-34 and protesters squatted on railway tracks of Khaltipur railway station for over six hours, that led to disruption of train services. When police intervened, clashes broke out. Shani-temple, Durga Temple and other Hindu temples were also attacked at Baliadanga, a residential area behind the police station and other places. Around 25 Hindu houses and shops were also ransacked. It took hours for police to bring the situation under control, after several shots of blank firing. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were also called in. A 22-year-old RSS activist Gopal Tiwari sustained a gunshot. However, there is no curfew like situation, as of now. Muslim community taking out a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari over his remarks against Prophet Muhammad in Karad, Maharashtra Muslim community taking out a protest rally against Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari over his remarks against Prophet Muhammad in Karad, Maharashtra Action against Kamlesh Tiwari Following protests all across the country, the self-proclaimed Hindu leader Kamlesh Tiwari was arrested in Lucknow, over his alleged remarks. The police also imposed a case of National Security Act. Meanwhile, Hindu Mahasabha distanced itself from his remarks and said that he is not a part of their outfit. On Dec 3, 2015, he had called Prophet Muhammad, the world's first homosexual. A case under IPC sections 153-A (promoting enmity between groups on ground of religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) was registered against Tiwari at Lucknow's Naka Hindola police station, DailyMail reported. Tiwari's statement had come after Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan called RSS leaders as homosexuals and said that is why they don't get married. Muslims gather in front of Dargah to protest over the derogatory remarks made by Kamlesh Tiwari of Hindu Mahasabha against Prophet Muhammad, in Ajmer. Muslims gather in front of Dargah to protest over the derogatory remarks made by Kamlesh Tiwari of Hindu Mahasabha against Prophet Muhammad, in Ajmer. Why media is silent? On Sept 28, 2015, when 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq Saifi was killed by a Hindu mob in Bisara village near Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, all media houses had given full coverage to the sensitive issue, but the same media houses are maintaining a mute silence on the recent Malda incident. [Azam Khan urges Centre to ban 'terrorist' RSS] Most of the West Bengal media has refrained from covering Malda clashes, as it may hamper peace and communal harmony in the poll-bound state. Muslim community members gather for a protest meeting over the derogatory remarks made by Kamlesh Tiwari of Hindu Mahasabha against Prophet Muhammad, in Karad, Maharashtra. Muslim community members gather for a protest meeting over the derogatory remarks made by Kamlesh Tiwari of Hindu Mahasabha against Prophet Muhammad, in Karad, Maharashtra. Some pertinent questions: Is Mamata Banerjee trying to appease Muslim voters? By taking no action, the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal government is trying to appease and woo Muslim voters. Shockingly, there has been no arrest in the protest led by Muslim mob. [Will liberal media raise its voice? Hindus have no right to celebrate Durga puja since 3 years] When police and BSF could not protect themselves, then how will they protect minority Hindus in Malda? Is BJP in West Bengal ignoring Hindus? A news report said that under the newly-elected WB BJP President Dilip Ghosh, the rights of Hindus are not addressed properly. Isn't it intolerance and why no award-wapsi now?
