Cops tortured 75-year-old man

In what is being seen as a major embarrassment for the Rajasthan police, a 75-year-old man, Jaidev, was hung from a tree and tortured in a police station in Dholpur. The horrendous act was caught on camera by a local photographer, Jitendra Parmar.

On March 27 a robbery worth Rs 1.5 lakh took place at a motor parts workshop in the area. The robbers took away a mobile phone as well. The police claim they traced Jaidev on the basis of the mobile's IMI that was stolen.

According to the police, he is the leader of a 'bawariya gang'. Along with him, 12 other people were also taken into custody but only Jaidev and another man were kept back and tortured.

After the pictures came out, the police rushed into damage control mode and besides Jaidev, all the other 12 taken into custody over the theft were released .

Jaidev was presented in a local court in Dholpur on Friday and was sent to judicial custody .

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Dholpur has suspended the Station House Officer (SHO) of the police station, Rajendra Kaviya for torturing Jaidev and an additional SP will enquire into the matter.
