GUNTUR2US Posted January 9, 2016 Report Posted January 9, 2016 International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) at Hyderabad has developed a high-yielding variety of tur dal (pigeon pea or kand in Telugu) that will help overcome the shortage of pulses in the country. The new variety (LRG 52) is named AMARAVATI after the upcoming capital city of Andhra Pradesh. While regular varieties will yield about 600 kgs per hectare, Amaravati will give as high as 2000 kgs. According to Icrisat scientists, Amaravati has the potential to more than double the yield of pigeon pea from the present levels. Amaravati was released into the market for commercial production by the state varietal release committee.
