Road project to uproot 3,100 trees in Hyderabad

he government has decided to lop off as many as 3,100 trees soon for its much-talked about Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP). And KBR National Park at Jubilee Hills, one of the city's largest green spaces, is set to lose 1,900 of its large and small trees (located inside and around the park).

The state government is planning to construct flyovers around the park for smooth flow of traffic to and from the IT and financial districts into the city as part of the SRDP.

Hence, the decision to axe the trees. The urban forestry wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has sought permission of the tree protection committee to fell them. The committee comprises three members from nongovernmental organizations, district forest officer of Hyderabad and director of GHMC urban forestry wing.

 

 

The GHMC engineering wing officials said trees have to be cut for construction of flyovers and widening of junctions at nine locations - KBR Park, Maharaja Agrasen junction, Film Nagar junction, Jubilee Hills checkpost, Ayyappa Society, Mind Space junction, Malaysian Township junction and LB Nagar junction. Incidentally, the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Park is a notified national park which cannot be touched by the state government without permission from the Union ministry of environment and forests.
