“I’m just outraged,” a former student, Renjie Li, told KNBC-TV after being informed of Klug’s death. “I’m mad that someone would do that to a young professor who just started his career at UCLA. It’s just a shame.”

KNX-AM reported that Klug was shot by a student who was “apparently despondent about his grades” before taking his own life.
