Because juries are influenced to a large extent by the media. In Nanavati's case, the jury was influenced due to the sympathetic approach the mainstream media(mostly controlled by Parsis) had towards him. That influenced their decision(8 in favor his acquittal to 1 against) and all the facts of the case weren't considered impartially according to the prosecution. 

Which is why the jury's decisions weren't taken into the final outcome of the case after this particular case and the govt decided to abolish the jury system altogether.
